What a day in Orioles History!

Yesterday, June 26, 2018 was an important day in Orioles History. Exactly, 48 years ago, Frank Robinson, an Orioles Hall Of Famer and an International Baseball Hall Of Famer, did what only 13 players have ever done: Hit two grand slams in the same game.

The year was 1970, and the game was at RFK Stadium in Washington. The Birds were playing the Senators. Who knew that this game would get Frank Robinson into the history books again?

Fast forward to the top of the fifth inning, bases were loaded, and Frank Robinson was up to bat. Frank hit the ball and it went past the fence for a home run!! The Orioles were up 5-0!

Lets go to the top of the sixth inning and once again, the bases were loaded with Frank Robinson up to bat. Frank smacked the ball against his bat to hit another grand slam! He was now the 6th player to hit two grand slams in one game.

The Orioles won the game, 12-2!

I have been reading about Robinson, and I have learned that he was a hitting machine! According to "This Great Game," Frank Robinson is the third greatest hitter in Orioles history.

That season, the Orioles went on to win the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds four games to one, although while Frank Robinson was not the MVP, another Robinson was - Brooks Robinson.

Since the June 27, 1970 game, seven more Major Leaguers have hit two grand slams in one game. Orioles catcher Chris Hoiles hit two on August 14, 1998. Before Frank Robinson hit his two grand slams in one game, Jim Gentile became the first Orioles player to hit two grand slams in one game. That happened on May 9, 1961.

After retiring from playing baseball, Frank Robinson was a manager for the Giants, Indians, Orioles, Expos, and the Nationals. He won many awards as manager.

Frank Robinson made history and was such an amazing Orioles player and teammate!
